Room Preparation

Critical Room Preparation & Considerations:

  • Thermal Insulation
    • We recommend using PIR insulation to walls, floors and ceilings, with a minimum U-Value of 0.34 W/m2 K
  • Vapour Barrier
    • A vapour or moisture barrier is fundamental to any mechanically cooled wine room to form a complete hermetically sealed envelope.
  • Doors & Glazing
    • We recommend double or triple-glazed panels and doors, if possible, for better temperature control and energy efficiency. Single glazed frameless glass can be suitable in some instances, however site specific advice will be required.
  • Thermal Breaks & Other Heat Sources
    • Keep all forms of heating away from the wine storage area and ensure underfloor heating has thermal breaks or sufficient clearance.
  • Sinks
    • Fit sinks and drainage with waterless traps, such as HepvO.
Location & Planning

When determining the appropriate location for your clients wine cellar or wine display wall, the following considerations should be made:

  • Understanding and avoiding unsuitable locations
    • Proximity to natural sunlight and other heat or high humidity sources should be considered and either avoided, or mitigated against.
  • Feasibility check of proposed climate control setup
    • Consider if council planning is required. Ensure that it is possible to run services between the indoor and outdoor unit, as well as implement all first-fix service requirements such as water supply, power and a gravity drain.
  • Determine the available space
    • Consider the footprint you can practically dedicate to wine storage.
This may dictate whether a wine room or wine wall is most suitable.
Contact your wine cellar specialist for information on set-out recommendations.
End User Considerations

Considerations such as wine collection and lifestyle:

Wine collection:

  • Desired bottle capacity?
  • Determine percentage of collection for cellaring (temp) and percentage for serving (temp). Note - generally domestic clients would want the majority of their wine stored at safe cellaring 13-15 c’, and a small proportion of whites/sparkling at 5-7c’. Hospitality clients may require a higher percentage at serving temperature.
  • Is the aim to maximise capacity or create a stunning showcase design?
  • Will you keep some of your collection in bonded warehouse storage? (advisable if you may resell your wine)

Lifestyle preferences:

  • Would you prefer your wine to be showcased on display within your entertaining space, or stored within a dedicated room?
  • Do you prefer to sit inside your wine room (coat on) for a spot of wine tasting, or would you rather be seated just outside in a more comfortable ambient environment?
